Wounded Soviet Veterans Welcomed by Troubled Vietnam Vets

Veterans of the Soviet conflict in Afghanistan participated in a guest program hosted by American veterans of the war in Vietnam, with a small contingent welcomed to the San Francisco area. The visit holds a medical focus: understanding and treating delayed stress disorder (what is today referred to as post-traumatic stress disorder, or PTSD). It also served as an opportunity for Soviet veterans who had lost limbs in the conflict to experience advancements in prosthetics unique to the western world. Prosthetics in the Soviet Union are comparatively unsophisticated and the one veteran in particular was to be fitted with a state-of-the-art artificial leg by Herman Hittenberger (Drew Hittenberger’s father) at his San Francisco office.
