Drew Hittenberger visits Haiti to help rebuild and stabilize prosthetic care after 2010 earthquake
Drew just returned from an exchange sponsored by Mobility Outreach International in Cap Haitien, Haiti where he evaluated amputees, instructed local prosthetists, and incorporated new technologies in an effort to provide a sustainable level of prosthetic care.
Drew just returned from Haiti on November 24, 2014 were he attended an exchange sponsored by Mobility Outreach International in Cap Haitien, Haiti. Mobility Outreach International is a worldwide organization dedicated to improving the lives of those with limb loss in developing countries. Started in 1989, Mobility Outreach International provides sustainable orthotic / prosthetic, orthopedic and rehabilitation expertise to clinics throughout the world. They operate clinics in Vietnam, Bangladesh, Sierra Leone and Haiti.
Drew was invited to participate in this Haiti exchange because of his prosthetic expertise. While Cap Haitian, he evaluated amputees, instructed local prosthetists and incorporated new technologies in an effort to provide a sustainable level of prosthetic care which will continue to address the needs of the amputee.
As you may recall, Haiti suffered a severe earthquake on January 12, 2010 in Port-au-Prince, which measured 7.0 magnitude on the Richter scale. More than 230,000 people were killed. 300,000 were injured and 1.5 million people were displaced.
Cap Haiten is on the other side of the island. It was less affected by the earthquake and as a result became a triage center outside the affected area were patient's could be transferred, fit with prosthetics and receive rehabilitation.
Mobility Outreach International has established a prosthetic clinic and is working with several clinics to treat club foot deformities in this area.
Drew Hittenberger, CP, BOCO has worked internationally with Doctors without Borders, The International Committee for the Red Cross (ICRI) in Nicaragua and the Earth Stewards Network within the former Soviet Union, addressing the needs of returning Soviet Afghanistan veterans.
